Altolamprologus calvus: Spawning

Dear Pam, I am attempting to spawn a pair of F-0 Altolamprologus calvus . They are currently housed in an unlit 15 gallon tank with flower pots and rocks with normal cichlid water conditions. I haven't see any breeding behavior. The male is very scittish so I rarely see him at all. Any advice? Erza.

Dear Sonny, Congratulations!! Lethrinops lethrinus is a beautiful fish, some call it the "Geophagus" of Lake Malawi, because it likes to sift in the substrate. The only drawback is having to wait so long for that silver fish to turn into a mature male, before its intense colors will knock ...

Dear Pam,

Hooray I have bred my Lethrinops lethrinus pair and its been a couple of weeks that Mom has been incubating her babies. When would be a good time to strip her of her fry?? Is it ever to early to strip the fry?

Dear Anne, Congratulations!! It sounds like you definitely have a female holding. The questions everyone wants to know is what to do next.... You can strip her if you so desire but what if she is only holding eggs? Since this sounds like your first experience, and your fishes first. I think you shou...

Stripping Aulonocara

Dear Pam, HELP!! We've got a female Aulonocara (Peacock Cichlid ) with a mouth full of something! Eggs or babies. We have been waiting for a long time for offspring from these guys. We've seen females with bulging buccal cavities a few times, but haven't done anything with them, and have never seen ...

Dear Albert, It is confusing!! I can tell you to look at the following: Eccles, D. H., & Trewavas E. (1989) Malawian Cichlid Fishes. The classification of some haplochromine genre. Lake Fish Movies, Herten, Germany Konings, Ad (1993) The Cichlid Year Book, Volume #3. Cichlid Press, 6837 St. Leon...

Sciaenochromis ahli; Identification

Hi Pam! You'll be the right one for a question about the identification of a Sciaenochromis sp. Recently I got a pair of Sciaenochromis the vendor told me it was Sciaenochromis ahli . The female died from tuberculosis two weeks later. Now I have 2 females and 1 male from another breeder, who also to...

Sciaenochromis fryeri: All about it

Dear Pam, I am looking for a little information on "Electric Blue" cichlids. The stores that I deal with are very "high" on this fish, but can offer little information regarding the following: What are their breeding habits (Temperature, size tank, filtration needs, lighting)? Wh...

Red Empress

Dear Why, Congratulations on spawning the Red Empress; Protomelas similis (formerly Haplochromis )!! The mature dominate males of this species are gorgeous and a colorful addition to anyones tank. I am afraid that you probably have some mutations in your progeny. I am assuming that the same male fer...

Red Empress

Dear Pam,

I'm breeding Red Empress and have about 12 fry from one spawn. All of the fry except 1 are stripped like the females. The other fry is white or colorless. Another spawn with a different female produced 25 fry with 5 white ones.

Why??

Pseudotropheus lombardoi

Dear Justin, Pseudotropheus lombardoi can breed at that size. They are harem spawners, thought, which means they usually breed in groups; one male to many females. You can breed them one on one, but you will need to keep a close eye on them. If the female is not ready to spawn, the male might kill h...

Pseudotropheus lombardoi

Dear Pam,

I am thinking abut trying to breed a pair of Pseudotropheus lombardoi. the female is about 3.25" and the male is about 3". Will they breed? Also, I have a 5-1/2 gallon tank that I would like to use for the breeding tank. Is it big enough? Thanks,

Justin
