54 gallon community?

Post by waterlynch »

Hi there. First off, thanks for the help0ful answers to my last question. To ease your confusion (i get excited sometimes and leave things out, sorry) I currently have one twenty gallon long and one ten gallon set up and running. The 10g contains my 2 kribs and their fry. That is until wednesday, when the parents will be moved back to the main tank (the 20 gallon long). My friend took my other tank and equipment off my hands and in a few days will be taking a few of my fish (my zebras and a couple congo tetras). I'll probably have to partition my twenty until I can get my new tank in order to keep my angelfish safe. Anyway, my next project is a 54 gallon bowfront for the kribs, and I was wondering if you could give me any tips on setting up a biotope of this size for them as well as possible tank mates. I'd like to have 4-5 kribs in this 54 gallon, with some other fish. Any advice? I'd mainly like the tank to be a good breeding environment for the kribs, as well as aesthetically pleasing (I LOVE planted tanks and good species variation!). Thanks again! My babies are happy liitle fry with big pink bellies...

Hi waterlynch,

Great, so you have your target fish, and now you just need to build your tank around them. Now did you know there are many types of kribs, so you want to make sure you get the same species, so that you don't have any crosses. These west African riverene cichlids are just a blast to work with. You can easily do a planted tank, and find all sorts of neat cichlids and other fish that they are found with in their natural habitat.

I highly encourage you to check out the following websites, African riverenes are really hot right now, and there is lots of new stuff coming in all the time. These two sites should have a handle on that.

Also you may want to purchase a book, I think it would be a good idea. The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa by Anton Lamboj, is fabulous, and has a wealth of info in it. Yes it is a bit pricey, but it is the latest and newest book on West Africans. ISBN# 3-928819-33-X
