Pam, I was recently admiring photos of your fishroom. I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit more about how you built your stands. I have a friend that was going to weld some wrought iron stands for me, but yours looks interesting. I wanted to hear more about it before I make the plunge paying for iron for my friend. Thanks.

Hi Mike!

I really wanted stands made out of some kind of iron, I was so tired of having to rebuild stands every 7 - 10 years and they just looked like crap!! So I considered angle iron, but welders are so expensive and so slow, so I kept procrastinating. Then the angle black iron, so its going to rust, or you can paint it, but eventually it is going to start peeling off. I work for a mechanical contractor and I buy unistrut alll day long for our projects, so I decided that this would be a good product use to build stands. First I don't need a welder as every this is bolted together. It is hot dipped Galvanized so it shouldn't rust, but if it does, it will be very easy to just replace the part that is rusting. It it is similar to 1.5" tube steel, but one side is open.

Like angle iron it is not cheap, but it seemed to fit my requirements the best. I tried to use pallet stands like what you would see at Costco, or home depot, but I would have to make so many modifications to fit my space, that it just didn't seem worth it, although there is a glut of those types of stands used around.

Unitstrut is a name brand, there are brands that are equal, like: Beeline, Powerstrut, Tolcostrut etc. but to give you and idea of this proudct check out:

I am coming to Kansas City in Octobe (2006), and I can show you some more pictures of us putting them together, and we can disuss this further if you want! I actually had a seismic engineer help me with my design.

For those of you reading this who haven't seen the stands we are talking about the link is below. You can access my other photo's at the top of this link.
