Texas Cichlid

Post by true_brews »

My texas laid eggs and there is no male, will they hatch? We've had her for around 9 months?

I've had my texas for about 9 months, and recently moved her to a larger tank- (175 gal). She has been housed with tin foil barbs, a few sharks, an arawana, a discus... never another cichlid, but now she's spawned in the new tank on a flat rock and is guarding it very well. She's currently with just tinfoil barbs. Will they hatch? Where would they have been fertilized from- could it still be from the pet store- I know some live bearers can do that, but not sure of cichlids? and what do I do now??

Hi Truebrews,

Most female cichlids will lay eggs if a male isn't present. The eggs will not hatch with out a male being present. The females may guard them, but usually at some point they realize they are not fertile and eat them, or they are eaten by other fish in the tank. There isn't a whole lot you can do, the fish will eventually eat the eggs.
