distinctions bifasciana and synspila.

Post by ssaash »

Hello, it is possible to learn synspila and bifasciata are determined by what signs?
I want to buy to grind from this couple, the seller says that it is bifasciata, but I have doubts.
Help to understand please.

Ssaash,

The current scientific names for these fish are:

Paratheraps bifaciatus

Their horizontal strip is nearly in the same location, but appears thinner, and then has a large blotch higher on the body under the dorsal.

Paratheraps melanurus - Paratheraps sysnpilus is synomyn = the same fish

"Paratheraps melanurus possesses a single dark horizontal to slightly angled band or stripe that typically extends from the caudal-fin base to near the mid-point of the body; ranging from about one-third to nearly half the length of the body. The band appears as a series of connected dark blotches that, in many specimens, are then broken into separated blotches near the band’s anterior extent. The characteristic "caudal band" is present in both adults and large juveniles, and distinguishes the species from its congeners as well as all other syntopic cichlid fishes." Juan Miguel Artigas Azas

Your larger fish has no blotching on the upper body, while the smaller one has more? you may want to post over at CRC Forum and see if they can ID it??
