Cichlasoma paranaense

Post by kenneth.kellum »

Hi, Pam. I'm building a new small fish room in my new home in Normal, IL. I used to see you at PCCA meetings when I lived in San Jose.

I did something a bit foolish and bought some fish I know nothing about. What can you tell me about Cichlasoma paranaense?

Hi Ken,

Cichlasoma paranaense should be a fun fish to keep! It is going to be very similar to Acara species. They don't get extremely large, and they have a smaller mouth, so they should get along good with other fish. You want to keep them a little warmer then African Cichlids, maybe 80 Degrees or so. A good staple cichlid flake and pellet should be a good every day food, and you can add some treats once in a while, like shrimp or black worms.

For breeding I would treat it like any of the smaller substrate spawners that we see from South and Central America. You may want to house them with some Tetra's for dither fish, give them a few flowerpots on their sides. Wait and see what happens!

Good Luck!
