Blue Neon follow up - Undo Point vs Undo Reef

Post by jwrivendell »

Pam - Thanks for the previous reply. You are correct that there are a lot of blue and yellows!!! I wanted to ask for further clarification on Undo Point and Undo Reef. My "Blue Neons" were sold to me as Aulonocara sp. Blue Neon Undo Point. I just want to make sure that I don't contribute to any more confusion in the hobby so I was researching this a bit more. I was thinking that he meant to name the fish as Aulonocara stuartgranti Blue Neon Undo Point.

I don't know that much about the geography but wondered if there was a distinction between Undo Point and Undo Reef. It may be that they are technically considered the same. I don't want to belabor minutia but that actually seems to be very important in the hobby for avoiding confusion. I appreciate you taking the time to help me better understand.

The following indeed looks like my males:

If you have an informative reference to scientific nomenclature or even the details of the lake collection points, let me know. I appreciate you taking the time to help me clarify this in my mind!

Thanks
John

Hi jwrivendell,

I think Undu Reef and Undu Point are the same. When you are looking at a species page on CRC, the link is below, after the picture and before the profile you have a menu to click on, you can hit map and it will show you the collection points of the species, and then can drill down further and actually see a picture of most of the documented sites.

Here is the link to the picture and the GPS location of Undu Reef, that kinda looks like a point! lol

https://www.cichlidae.com/locality.php? ... es#content

The actual scientific name would be: Aulonocara stuartgranti undu reef blue neon
First the Genus: Aulonocara, second the species: stuartgranti, third the location site: undu reef, and fourth the common name: blue neon

Keep in mind that Auloncara stuartgranti is a huge group and they are found throughout the lake, so any information you can find regarding this species; stuartgranti, whether it is the same location or not, it would be info that you can apply to your maintaining and keeping of said species.

On each page of CRC you can do a search, and it will come up with a lot of hits for this popular peacock.
