Ophthalmotilapia sp. “Whitecap”

Post by gregor.bauer »

Pam, can you say something about this species (Ophthalmotilapia sp. “Whitecap”).
Is this newly discovered species or. new name for some previus Ophthalmotilapia?
(I don't find nothing about this species on cichlidae.com and in Ad Konings books...)

Tnx,
Gregor

Hi Gregor,

I believe this term Ophthalmotilapia sp. whitecap is a term from African Diving Ltd. Where they (African Diving Ltd.) are using the term white cap, Konings is using ventralis and the term "Big Blue". Ventralis is the current recognized name.

African Diving has expressed an opinion that perhaps "ventralis" is too large of a group and that because of geographical barriers and locations perhaps they need further study. They would split them between the north and south with the boundary at the Kipili islands.

But at this point it is still ventralis.

Hope that helps!
