Trying to spawn Dicrossus filamentosus

Post by Hudson Ensz »

Recantly i bought some beautiful Dicrossus filamentosus.
Initially i bought three males and a female but in the space of two days the only one left was a healthy looking male just getting his splendid colors, i think he will live. I bought two more females and another male the male and one female were not looking very healthy and died, however the female that is still living looks very healthy. What could have killed the others? i am thinking it may have been stress.
I am trying to spawn them in a Twenty inch long and thirteen inches wide. the water is from the amazon as i live in manaus. So the water peremeters are, i think, perfect, Ph around 5, and very soft water. Also the setup i think is good, with beach sand, drift wood, lots of large leaves and some plants.
I have a small school of cardinal tetras which i constantly am giving them up as food fish for my pike etc. They are NOT neccasary, if they get in the way i can easily take them out. i also will be trying to breed apistos and possibly rams. i have over filtration with an atman 302 internal filter and i do from 1-3 water changes a week. Back to the question of spawning, how do i do it? today i saw my male wrigling about in the sand and then snapping up leftover food that came up. is he just eating or digging a pit? my male is larger than the female are any of them ready to spawn? (the female has orange fins) Even if they do eventually spawn what do the babies eat? newly hatched artemia? tips on apisto's and rams would be VERY helpfull. Is there anything i overlooked? thanks a lot :D

Hi Hudson,

This is a difficult cichlid to find and to spawn! You just need to find some cichlid dwarf enthusiasts and you should be able to get the answers to your questions, I am afraid I just don't know the secrets of the trade on this little beauty! Start out with asking away on the Cichlidae Forum. I have given you a link below for a previous discussion of this species. Also a couple of articles that may give you some insight.

Also hanging out where the dwarf cichlid people do will help:

Good Luck, these are fun fish!
