Hi Luke,

This fish is typically called Gymnogeophagus balzanii. I see that it is listed at a Synonym to this species which means it is the same fish. This particular collection site was named Gymnogeophagus cyanopterus and described as Miranda Ribeiro in 1918. You didn't include a picture, but you can google balzanii and come up with some pics for comparison to make sure we are talking about the same fish. Here are some sites that may be of interest:

There have been several groups of cichlid enthusiasts that have been going to Uruguay and Argentina the last few years, so I would not be surprised if some of them have brought it back with them. While balzanii is not real common it certainly is in the hobby, however you don't see collection sites listed. This may be because they are breeding them in Florida and they are not importing them very often. While you have a collection site, so that would bring some added value. Typically this fish go for about $5.00 - $7.00 each for a 1" fry among hobbyists, of course retail would be much higher. Hobbyists are always interested in their reproduction behaviors since they are a delayed mouthbrooder.

I think they are pretty cool!
