Here's a short video of Hypsophrys nicaraguensis in its natural habitat in Laguna Xiloá, Nicaragua. The first part shows breeding pairs above the sandy substrate, where they dig caves to deposit their (non-adhesive) eggs. Note the many entrances into these caves. The second part shows pairs guarding their fry in the rocky habitat. Here they suffer from competition by Neetroplus nematopus, which has led to the altruistic behavior I showed in my other video.
Michi Tobler (2005) reported on death feigning behavior in Parachromis friedrichsthalii. In this short video I show more or less the same type of behavior in Parachromis managuensis. Young specimens of this species in Laguna Apoyo, Nicaragua, act as if they are not well, showing a color pattern that is usually associated with frightened fish sitting on the rock-face, but suddenly jumping and trying to catch the sardinas swimming about by the zillions. Fascinating.

This video clip shows some of the cichlids in the Río Buen Suceso, a small stream on the island of Ometepe, Nicaragua. After a glimpse of Parachromis friedrichsthalii trying to hide near the bank of the river, a breeding female of Astatheros longimanus is shown, guarding her eggs deposited on a tiny rock on the bottom. The main part consists of Cryptoheros siquia, holding its own in the fast current, and Tomocichla underwoodi (or tuba if you prefer) with a batch of uniquely colored fry.
