Dr. Wolfgang STAECK studied biology at the free University of Berlin. After graduation he worked as a research assistant and lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin for ten years where he got his PhD. For several years he taught biology at a high school, later he was a trainer of student teachers.

His main interest is the behaviour of cichlid fishes. Therefore he has had many years of experience in keeping and breeding a great number of different species in the aquarium. He is known to the hobbyists by both his lectures and the publication of dozen books and numerous articles on cichlids in German and international magazines.

Since the early 1970s he has travelled widely not only in Africa and Madagascar, but also in Central and South America to study cichlid fishes in their natural habitats. He visited both Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi more than half a dozen times and knows almost all countries in South America.

These numerous trips have led to the discovery of many new species. As results of his field work he has documented the ecological data and the natural living conditions of many cichlids for the first time. In addition he published the scientific description of more than two dozens of new species of fish.
