The males of Lethrinops auritus have interestingly decorated bowers consisting of small heaps of sand/mud arranged in a circle around a central, slightly larger heap alongside of which spawning takes place. Such delicate bowers are often flattened by wave action and with the onset of the northern winds in September most of the breeding in Lethrinops auritus has stopped because the males cannot maintain their bowers any longer.

A pair of Copadichromis chrysonotus spawning in mid water at Tsano Rock, Lake Malawi [Malawi]. Note that each time the female retrieves an egg she nuzzles the male's anal fin, probably inhaling his milt to fertilize the eggs inside her mouth. The male holds his fins towards the side of the female while quivering, probably funneling the milt in the direction of the anal fin.
