Note by the photographer Michael K. Oliver (2012) who kindly supplied the photograph of Geoffrey: " Another seldom-photographed big name in the cichlid world is Geoffrey Fryer, best known to us as the senior author, with T.D. Iles, of The Cichlid Fishes of the Great Lakes of Africa. Here is my photo of Fryer in 1971 in his office at the Freshwater Biological Association on Lake Windermere, in the Lake District of England. I was an undergraduate at the time, on my way home from my second stay in Malawi. Fryer was as genial as he appears; he and his wife had put me up in their house overnight on a previous visit, and were again gracious hosts on this occasion. Geoffrey had already published all the cichlid descriptions he ever would, and was just correcting the proofs of the cichlid book - and was eager to arrange to use some of my cichlid photos in the TFH edition of the book. Geoffrey was somewhat reluctant to pose for a picture, but I must have been assertive! He had an amusing sense of humor. I remember asking his opinion of Desmond Morris's book The Naked Ape. He answered, "Desmond Morris! Of all the naked apes, he's the type specimen! ".
