Note: Herichthys bartoni is restricted to the springs in the valley of Rioverde in the central part of the state of San Luis Potosí in México. The Rioverde valley is a semi-arid area with an increasing population and an equally increasing demand for water. While most of the springs are still in good shape, the pressure on the local fauna increases every day. Among the major dangers for Herichthys bartoni are the increasing recreational use of the springs and the introduction of competitive exotic fish species. Nowadays a good number of exotics are present in the Herichthys bartoni habitat, including Herichthys carpintis and Oreochromis aureus. Although the water from the valley springs valley is high in sulfur and not good for agriculture, its use has been increasing in the past years and some of the springs have suffered lowered levels or even desiccation (e.g. Manga larga and Los Anteojitos), fortunately, Los Anteojitos has seemingly recovered in the past few years.
