German word surface growth or overgrowth. It is formed by complex layers of organic (detritus, bacteria, algae, microscopic animals) and inorganic (clays and other fine particles) matter occurring on subaquatic surfaces (stems and leaves of larger aquatic plants, stones, or other objects).
