Tanganyika: Chituta Bay
Conservation: Water pollution and overfishing are the greatest risks. The dense population in Mpulungu is moving towards Chituta Bay, bringing with them more garbage and more plastic. There is no recycling, and trash and plastic are often burned. The lake is used for everything in the smaller villages around the bay; fishing, drinking, bathing, etc.
The number of fishermen on Lake Tanganyika has increased and the continued use of the illegal fishing gear is depleting the fish stocks. There are fishing rules and regulations in Zambia, but there is little or no enforcement.
