Tanganyika: Halembe

Artenschutz: Overfishing is a risk for the fish fauna at Halembe, due to increased human population and because fish is their main source of protein. Fishing regulations are not enforced, and the use of illegal nets and gear has also put the fish at risk.

Lake Tanganyika is at risk for pollution because there is no water or sewer system in the village. Increased farming and livestock keeping will also contribute to increased pollution.

Regarding ornamental fish at risk, Tropheus duboisi found between the villages of Maswa and Halembe has been on the "at risk" list for more than 10 years. Divers have consistently reported fewer and fewer individuals with each visit. It is common knowledge that T. duboisi is critically endangered in this area. Sadly, you still see them from time to time on fish exporter's lists.
