" Seven riverine goby cichlids are described from the Malagarasi (Orthochromis kasuluensis, O. mazimeroensis, O. mosoensis, O. rubrolabialis, O. uvinzae), Luiche (O. luichensis) and Rugufu (O. rugufuensis) rivers, three eastern Lake Tanganjika affluents which belong to the same hydro-geographic system before the Tanganyika Rift was formed. The coloration of the different species is distinctive, in particular the head pattern ("head mask"). Together with the previously describes O. malagaraziensis they form a monophyletic group which can be considered as a small species flock. The inclusion of this species flock in the genus Orthochromis disagrees with the viewpoint of Roberts & Kullander (1994), who included all African riverine goby cichlids in Schwetzochromis. Probably all Orthochromis are mouth brooders and it appears that maternal mouth-brooding in haplochromines evolutionary preceded the origin of egg dummies "
