Ferdinand Deppe’s lost cichlid, Herichthys deppii (Heckel, 1840)

" Herichthys deppii, a relative of the better known – but no less beautiful – Texas cichlid, Herichthys cyanoguttatus, is the most recently identified species of North American cichlid. The types of H. deppii are part of one of the first ichthyological collections of freshwater fishes made in Mexico that reached in Europe, those of Ferdinand Deppe (Miller, 2006:51), and one of the first species of North American cichlid to have been scientifically described; after Nandopsis tetracanthus and together with Parachromis friedrichsthalii, in 1840. H. deppii is one of the species in the Herichthys cyanoguttatus species group inhabiting the affluents of the Gulf of Mexico north of the city of Veracruz, which are vernacularly known as Guapotes or Mojarras Guapotas.
