" Apistogramma martini sp. n., the description is based on a total of 69 specimens from a little tributary of the Rio Nanay near the village of Alvarenga (formerly Puerto Alianza), District Santa Maria, Province Maynas (formerly Iquitos), Departamento Loreto, Peru (near 74°25'40''W/03)31'10''S). A. martini sp. n. is separated from all other Apistogramma species by the combination of, in both sexes, lyre shaped caudal-fin, low dorsal fin framed by two coloured marginal bands as well as dark spot on the base of the soft rays, big spot on the caudal peduncle, and a distinct, in female enlarged, lateral spot. A. martini sp. n., a representative of the A. cacatuoides-complex, is a typical inhabitant of small forest ceeeks and was found syntopic with Nannostomus mortenthaleri in small brooks with sandy bottom "
