" The comparison of collections of Ptychochromis from throughout Madagascar, including the primary types of all nominal species, and a species-level phylogeny based on the analysis of nucleotide sequence data, demonstrate that P. grandidieri is a valid species. Ptychochromis grandidieri, restricted to eastern drainages, is removed from synonymy with P. oligacanthus, a taxon restricted to northwestern Madagascar and the satellite island of Nosy Be. Ptychochromis grandidieri is distinguished from congeners by coloration, pigmentation pattern, and morphology of the second pharyngobranchial toothplates. Ptychochromis madagascariensis is removed from synonymy with P. oligacanthus and instead placed in synonymy with P. grandidieri. A phylogeny for Ptychochromis, based on the analysis of mitochondrial nucleotide characters, is presented. In the recovered topology the ptychochromine cichlids, comprising Ptychochromoides, Ptychochromis, and Oxylapia, all endemic Malagasy genera, are monophyletic. In this hypothesis Ptychochromis is monophyletic. Members of the genus restricted to western drainages (P. inornatus, P. oligacanthus) are monophyletic, and this clade is the sister taxon to P. grandidieri, a species restricted to eastern and southeastern basins.
