" Mate choice by female Apistogramma cacatuoides was tested in aquaria. Females significantly preferred inconspicuously coloured males from the wild or their F1- or F2-inbreds over brightly coloured males of domestic stocks. Most wild-caught males are inconspicuous. In interspecific mating experiments, female A. cacatuoides chose males of their own species with high statistical confidence instead of males of A. juruensis, A. martini, A. panduro, or A. sp. ‘brustband’, all considered close relatives of A. cacatuoides. Despite their overall similarities in morphology and colour, this supports their recognition as distinct species "
