" Apistogramma borellii was described by Regan in 1906 and named in honor of the collector Dr A. Borelli (Mayland and Bork 1997). It is the key member of the borellii-complex within the genus Apistogramma. However, there is still debate over which species are most closely related to A. borellii. It is found throughout Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia in rivers in the central and upper Rio Paraguay River system (Romer 2000) "
