" The cichlid fish P. microlepis was investigated in its natural habitat. It is a maternal mouthbrooder but has some features intermediate between substrate brooders and mouthbrooders. The female broods the eggs and embryos in her mouth, while the male, though staying near her, has nothing to do with caring for them. However, the free-swimming young are guarded by both parents on the substrate until they become independent of the parents "
