" The biomass of pelagic fish in Lake Malawi/Nyasa is estimated to be around 180,000 tonnes, perhaps representing the last major underexploited fishery resource of Lake, Malawi. Approximately 21 species of the genera Rhamphochromis, Diplotaxodon and Pallidochromis were recorded, at least nine of which are presently undescribed. The offshore community, living over the deoxygenated depths is dominated by 5 cichlid species. Many other species of these genera are more properly considered as midwater-feeding members of the demersal shelf or reef fish communities. All of the species studied in detail are abundant and widespread in all suitable habitats, and we found no evidence of population structuring in three species investigated. There would appear to be no immediate danger of species or population extinctions as a result of current patterns of exploitation of these species "
