This species is listed as insertae sedis by Stawikowksi & Werner (1998) and Kullander (2003). Whereas molecular phylogenetic data place the species at the base of Astatheros (Hulsey 2004), Miller (2005) assigns 'C.' octofasciatum to the genus Archcentrus. It is unclear, however, which definition of the genus was applied. The generic assignment of this species is still tendative and seems to belong to an undescribed genus (Concheiro et al. 2007; Schmitter-Soto, pers. comm.)
