'Cichlasoma' trimaculatum was previously assigned to genus Amphilophus. Kullander (2003) and Miller (2005), however, excluded this species from the genus and notes that generic allocation of the species is unclear. It is unclear on the basis of which characters this decision was made. Based on molecular genetic results (Concheiro Pérez et al., 2007), A. trimaculatus remains listed within Amphilophus here.
