Heros montezuma Heckel, 1840 is considered as a synonym of H. deppii by Kullander (2003). However, Kullander (2003) admits that "the status of Heros montezuma is uncertain pending examination of the holotype." The type locality given by Heckel is only "México". The holotype is deposited in Vienna (NMW 17359).
