Aulonocara baenschi is one of the few species that is affected by over-collection by the ornamental fish trade. A dive made in late 2006 revealed only a very small number of males in color at the reef. I suggested to the collectors to leave this species recover for a year at least. They didn't take my suggestion and one month later I heard that a new site on the reef was found and was now being exploited. This species is being bred in relatively large numbers and we really don't need to plunder the natural habitat for the last few specimens.
