Ochrona: Chetia brevis jest wpisany prez Międzynarodową Unię Ochrony Przyrody do Czerwonej Księgi Gatunków Zagrożonych IUCN jako (EN) Zagrożony (2017). Chetia brevis is threatened by water abstraction, pollution and siltation from agriculture, as well as by introduction of alien species within its limited native range. It has therefore been translocated into protected habitats within the Inkomati drainage, including dams in the Kruger National Park. A negative impact on native fishes is not expected. Chetia brevis seems to flourish in the dams (de Moor & Bruton 1988, Skelton 2001).
