Original description as Pseudotropheus greshakei:

  • Meyer, Manfred & W. Foerster. 1984. "Un nouveau Pseudotropheus du lac Malawi avec des remarques sur le complexe Pseudotropheus-Melanochromis (Pisces, Perciformes, Cichlidae)". Revue fran├žaise d'Aquariologie et Herpetologie. (1983) v. 10; (n. 4); pp. 107-112 (crc01074)

Conservation: Metriaclima greshakei is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006). M. greshakei is a common resident of Makokola Reef, but it is not found at any other location in the lake. This narrow endemism led to its assessment of Vulnerable, but since the species is not targeted by local fishermen (too small and difficult to catch between the rocks) and barring a natural disaster that would destroy the reef, I would suggest that the species should be classified as Least Concern.
