The fact that Taeniolethrinops praeorbitalis inhabits shallow water on a regular basis makes it very prone to be caught in beach seines. It is still a common cichlid in the Cape Maclear area but its large size makes it a much wanted food fish and can thus become easily threatened by over-fishing.
