Conservation: Nimbochromis polystigma is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2018). Although one would expect to find N. polystigma a common catch in beach seines, since they operate normally in large hunting packs, it is rarely seen landed. They probably are able to evade seines and are more likely to be caught with hook and line. N. polystigma is a very common cichlid in Lake Malawi and no threats to its existence are apparent.
