The species is certainly the most common member of Trematocara and has been encountered at night at many different sites around the lake. The species is too small to be of value as a food fish and during the day when it could inadvertently end up in beach seines it resides in very deep water way beyond any seine net. Because of its daily migration T. marginatum is correctly listed as Least Concern.
