Original description as Tropheus moorii:

ZooBank:ED517DC1-5285-4A71-8A2A-E4A4F1DF1878.

  • Boulenger, George Albert. 1898. "Report on the fishes recently obtained by Mr. J. E. S. Moore in Lake Tanganyika". Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. vol. 3: pp. 494-497 (crc00006)

Sub-species:

Conservation: Tropheus moorii is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006). Tropheus moorii is an abundant species in the wild, but some varieties (such as the very popular "sunset" type from the Mpulungu surroundings) seems to show reduced size in imports, perhaps because of overfishing.
