Original description as Aulonocara guentheri:

ZooBank:DE9489EF-A593-4F79-B5CD-DDF23A706590.

  • Eccles, David H.. 1989. "Aulonocara Regan". Malawian Cichlid Fishes - The classification of some Haplochromine genera. pp. 138-150 (crc01894)

Conservation: Aulonocara guentheri is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2006). I believe that most populations of Aulonocara guentheri have been wiped out by over-fishing with beach seines. It is a very rare species nowadays.
