Nominal species Pseudocrenilabrus philander (Weber, 1897)

Original description as Haplochromis philander dispersus:

ZooBank:ACC92BAF-E61E-4A96-9F37-1AB68EEB062B.

  • Trewavas, Ethelwynn. 1936. "Dr. Karl Jordan's expedition to South-West Africa and Angola: The fresh-water fishes". Novitates Zoologicae. 40:63-74 (crc00982)

Conservation: Pseudocrenilabrus philander dispersus is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. The Lake Otjikoto form is one of the geographically restricted populations, which are potentially threatened by habitat changes. This has already been observed by K. Jordan, the collector of the types (footnote in Trewavas 1936): “Reported to be plentiful in L. Otjikoto, but we saw very few. The pumping station installed at the lake may have destroyed the fish, or the water may have been poisoned by cannon, etc., thrown into the lake by the German contingent before surrendering“.
