Conservation: Herichthys tepehua is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. De la Maza et al. (2014:222) explain how Herichthys tepehua has become extremely rare and is seldom captured in the Cazones, Tecolutla, and Solteros Rivers. Many populations appear to be confined to the most isolated tributaries or areas with turbid water where visibility limits the use of diving masks and homemade spears used by local fishermen.
