Ochrona: Herichthys tepehua nie jest wpisany przez Międzynarodową Unię Ochrony Przyrody do Czerwonej Księgi Gatunków Zagrożonych IUCN jako. De la Maza et al. (2014:222) explain how Herichthys tepehua has become extremely rare and is seldom captured in the Cazones, Tecolutla, and Solteros Rivers. Many populations appear to be confined to the most isolated tributaries or areas with turbid water where visibility limits the use of diving masks and homemade spears used by local fishermen.
