Although thousands upon thousands of Cyphotilapia frontosa have been collected for the aquarium trade, many more are eaten by the local fishermen. Besides being caught on hook and line many are also caught with deep-set gill nets. Currently there appears little threat to the survival of Cyphotilapia frontosa but such can easily change when more and more net gill nets are set in increasingly deeper water.
