Conservation: Ctenochromis pectoralis is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (EX) extinct (1996). Ctenochromis pectoralis is erroneously classified as ‘extinct‘ in the IUCN red list. Evidently it has been confused there (as well as in FishBase) with Harpagochromis squamulatus from Lake Victoria, see comments. According to Seegers (personal communication), Ctenochromis pectoralis is very common, and there is not even a trace of danger of extinction.
