Conservation: Protomelas taeniolatus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2018). Protomelas taeniolatus is still a very common cichlid at most localities but around the two tiny islands in the southeastern arm of the lake, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi, overfishing using hook-and-line has decimated the populations to a few specimens.
