Original description as Haplochromis taeniolatus:
- Trewavas, Ethelwynn. 1935. "A Synopsis of the Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyasa". Annals and Magazine of Natural History. Series 10; pp. 65-118 (crc00118)
- Haplochromis cancellus Greenwood, 1963, with type locality at Lake Malawi. Determiner: Eccles et al., 1989
Conservation: Protomelas taeniolatus is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2018). Protomelas taeniolatus is still a very common cichlid at most localities but around the two tiny islands in the southeastern arm of the lake, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi, overfishing using hook-and-line has decimated the populations to a few specimens.
