Conservation: Metriaclima pulpican is not evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species. While the Mozambique populations are probably safe, those from around Likoma archipelago are certainly vulnerable because of their concentration in small areas and becaue of the easiness to spot males. Thus, this species should be imported only with parsimony, all the more since it is easy to breed in aquarium and since its popularity allows cost-effective permanent strains for breeders. Its tendency to hybridize with several mbunas is nevertheless a threat for keeping good strains with unconscientious breeders.
