Original description as Melanochromis chipokae:

ZooBank:68A241BF-35FB-4181-AB7D-6859CD7AFB0A.

Conservation: Melanochromis chipokae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (VU) vulnerable (2006). That is exactly how the current situation is. The species is restricted to a very small rocky reef near Chipoka and hasn't been seen anywhere else. Increased fishing by ornamental fish collectors in the area has reduced their numbers to a critically low level.
