Conservation: Pterophyllum altum is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (LC) least concern (2020). Although Pterophyllum altum is threatened by illegal mining and strong fishing pressure given it is an ornamental species, it has a wide distribution from the upper part of the Orinoco River to the river region of Inírida river, Venezuela-Colombia frontier. The Colombian Fisheries Authority has established a closure plan since January 2020 that does not allow its capture in Colombia and therefore, the collectors of this country cannot trade with fish from Venezuela either (Lasso, 2023).
