Although L. boulengeri lives on the open sand, it is too small to be targeted by fishermen and it is usually found too deep to be accessible by beach seines (which are currently forbidden to employ in the Tanzanian part of the lake). So even though it has a relatively small area of distribution for a sand-dwelling species, it does not seem to be threatened by over fishing or otherwise.
