Artenschutz: Haplochromis chromogynos wurde durch die Internationale Union für die Erhaltung der Natur (IUZN) in der Roten Liste bedrohter Arten bewertet als (VU) potentiell gefährdet (2010). Haplochromis chromogynos along with many other small cichlid species from Lake Victoria did not fare well by the upsurge of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) in the 1980s. During this decade, Haplochromis chromogynos disappeared from most all "known" locations in the north of the lake (Kaufman personal communication). In the southern areas of it's range, it was not seen after 1982 (Witte 1992). I speculate that when Haplochromis chromogynos was discovered at Zue Island, it was the reminisce of a once large and stable population. This fish has not been seen at this locale in recent years. In addition to being predated upon, falling lake levels in recent years do not bode well for near shore species set in stable micro environments. At best, this species should be considered critically endangered.
