保育: Pungu maclareni 被評鑑為國際自然保育聯盟瀕危物種紅皮書名單中的 (CR) 極危 (2009). Considering its restricted distribution to a single lake, the increasing human pressure from the neighboring town of Kumba on the lake (including introduced species), Pungu maclareni, and all other endemics of Barombi Mbo should be and are subject of breeding programs. Protection of the lake itself was suggested on various occasions, but so far no further steps seem to have been taken to reach this aim.
