Conservation: Stomatepia mariae is evaluated by the international union for the conservation of nature in the iucn red list of threatened species as (CR) critically endangered (2009). The species is listed as critically endangered mainly due to its range being so limited in that it is only found in the relativly small (1.4miles across) lake Barombi Mbo. Further the lakes are considered instable habitats as they are of volcanic origin and are in danger of gas outflows which could destroy the entire habitat at once.
